  • Overview

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES TEST WILL BE ADMINISTERED 
     
    Operate various types of heavy gas/diesel construction equipment used in the performance, construction and maintenance function at various sites in Doña Ana County.

    Responsibilities

    • As the lead operator, provides direction to assigned field crew and operates equipment at various sites for actual construction and maintenance operations.
    • Conducts vehicle inspections; Transports equipment to job sites; Operates all equipment such as, but not limited to, motor-grader, water pull, scraper, dozer, transport tractor, 3-5 yd. loader, semi-tractor end dump, excavator, vacuum truck, street sweeper, etc.
    • Checks grades on roadway utilizing a level and established elevations; Reads and interprets plans for construction, maintains grades and cut/fill stakes in accordance with specific instructions and/or plans specifications.
    • Maintains streets, culverts and drainage ways; observes inspects, and monitors conditions.
    • Maintains daily reports and submits the information to the assigned Foreman describing tasks performed and materials used including but not limited to, tons of material removed from water systems, miles of road swept, number and size of culverts cleaned and miles graded.
     
    ADDITIONAL DUTIES. Position requires, on occasion, work beyond normal business hours and/or extended hours, nights and weekends. May be subject to emergency call-out.  

     

    Qualifications

    Education. High School Diploma or GED preferred.

     

    Experience. Four (4) years full-time experience in a general construction environment, of which at least two years in heavy equipment operations.

    Education / Experience substitution. As per County Policy.

    Licenses/Certifications. A Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License is required; Endorsements (H, T, P, N, X) preferred; Traffic Control Certification is desirable. Position requires an acceptable driving record. 

    Other (e.g., post-offer medical exam, polygraph, background check, driver's license record, etc.). Background, driver's license check, general skills test, and drug and alcohol testing.
     
     

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

     

    Knowledge of: Construction plans; methods and equipment of road construction and maintenance; types and uses of equipment used in road construction and maintenance; operating characteristics of maintenance and construction equipment; federal, state, and county laws; ordinances; OSHA safety regulations.

     

    Skills: Acquired through considerable training and experience, to operate and maintain varied equipment for purposes such as performing numerous standardized maintenance operations.Ac


    Ability to: Plan and lead the work of a crew; understand, interpret and carry out oral and written instructions; establish and maintain a working relationship with employees and the public; use good judgment; plan work schedules; maintain daily reports.
