  • Overview

    Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, performs general maintenance and repairs for county owned and leased properties.

    Responsibilities

    Incumbents may work independently, as a part of a regular maintenance crew, or as assistants to skilled tradesmen; performs rough concrete and carpentry work; installs sheetrock; replaces faulty electrical fixtures such as fuses, sockets and switches; makes minor wiring repairs; removes and replaces plumbing fixtures such as faucets, and sprinkler beads; clean roof and patio drains; clears stoppages in sinks and toilets; performs preparatory work for painting projects by washing walls, filling in or smoothing surfaces, masking areas, and/or setting up scaffolding; paint markings on asphalt, floors or similar surfaces, repair and service interior and exterior service elevators by lubricating parts such as clean, adjust, lubricate, or replace door closers, locks, latches, hinges and other building hardware; makes minor repairs to office furniture and equipment; conducts repairs to fences and gates; operates and maintains a variety of power and hand tools of the various trades and equipment; operates and maintains motor vehicles, sweeper, compact tractor, and/or front-end loader;  may drive a truck or other light vehicle in the course of duties; may be required to maintain outside grounds areas; responsible for ensuring that work is performed safely and within the guidelines of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and state regulations; and is responsible for knowing and abiding by all department and County policies and procedures.

     

     

    ADDITIONAL DUTIES. Performs related work as required

    Qualifications

    Education. High school diploma or GED

     

    Experience. Four (4) years full-time experience performing general maintenance and/or plumbing maintenance and repairs
     
    Education/Experience substitution. Any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the essential functions of this position
     
    Licenses/Certifications. Must have a valid unrestricted driver’s license
     
    Other (e.g., post-offer medical exam, polygraph, background check, driver’s license record, etc.). Background check and driver’s license record; Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
               
     

     

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

     

    Must have knowledge of the various equipment, materials, methods, and practices used in custodial or general maintenance work; proper methods of performing minor plumbing and electrical repairs; paint preparation and application; safe lifting and carrying practices; and safe handling and storage practices for a variety of maintenance tools and supplies, equipment and machines.

     

    Must have the ability to effectively communicate in oral and/or written form; follow written instructions and work independently; read service manuals and complete minor repairs using standard methods; operate wax strippers, high-speed buffers, and a variety of general tools and equipment related to building repairs; and establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with others.
