Meter Specialist responsible for performing specialized duties in relation to water meter maintenance & reading, customer service work orders, utility billing processes and water conservation.

Responsibilities

  • Reads and records consumption of residential and commercial water meters with mobile and hand-held reading devices and manual reads; verifies that readings are within parameters and troubleshoots problems related to meters and reading equipment.
  • Installs, repairs, and inspects water meters, meter reading equipment, valves, pressure regulators, and flow testing meters, and trains other staff members in all aspects of the job.
  • Responds to customer service requests, not limited to connections, disconnects, water quality checks, rereading meters, checking for leaks, etc., and may be required to respond to emergency callouts or assist the operation crews with system repairs.
  • Posts notices at physical locations concerning billing, customer information, and encroachment issues and perform work required to keep meter pits accessible.
  • Creates and updates spreadsheets, and updates water and sewer maps.
  • Ensures proper inventory of meter-related equipment and parts; orders supplies as required.
  • Maintains records utilizing asset management software (e.g. beehive) of work performed, geo tagging update and materials used.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a team.
  • Represents the Camino Real Regional Utility Authority (CRRUA), with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
  • Assists management in presenting before the CRRUA Board for meter quality reporting, when necessary.
  • Be willing to travel for training events and attending training workshops.

 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

 Education. High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

 

Experience. Two (2) years of Water or Wastewater Utility Experience.  Two (2) years of advanced administrative, or customer service, work experience.

 

Education/Experience Substitution. In accordance with CRRUA policy.

 

Licenses/Certifications. Must have a valid driver’s license. Must obtain a New Mexico Water Operator Water Level I certificate within two years of employment.  Preference: Level II Water Certification.

 

Other (e.g., post-offer medical exam, polygraph, background check, driver’s license record, etc.). Must pass background check, to include credit check and motor vehicle record check. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THER POSTION:

 

Knowledge: Must have knowledge of

  • General office practices, procedures, and use of office equipment.
  • Meter services rules, regulations, policies, and operating procedures including water conservation and identifying sources of high water use.
  • Meter equipment used by the CRRUA or the Utility Industry.
  • Basic mathematics with a focus on water flow and metering.
  • Safe work methods and safety regulations while performing maintenance work.
  • Record keeping practices of work performed. Preparing clear and concise written reports.
  • Computer applications related to the work with a focus on meter reading, charts & graphs and word documents. (e.g. Becon, Caselle, Waterscope, Metron).
  • Presenting data of water consumption and meter system data health before the CRRUA Board when called upon.

 

Skills: Must have skills in computer and applicable software operation. Handling sensitive and confidential matters professionally, and tactfully dealing with a culturally diverse population. 

  • Establishing and maintaining effective and cooperative working relationships with others. Understanding and following oral and written directions. Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities of CRRUA.
  • Identifying and resolving operational, technical, and procedural problems and communicates effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Safely operating an assortment of measurement tools and equipment.
  • Using computers, associated software packages and electronic meter reading equipment.
  • Safely driving light duty trucks.
  • Reading and interpreting manuals, specifications and troubleshooting metering equipment.
  • Estimating necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments and meet the needs of small to medium sized Cleaning-In Place (CIP) or maintenance projects.
  • Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
