An assessment will be administered during the interview process.

 

Under general supervision of the Fleet Supervisor, performs skilled repair and maintenance of a diverse variety of specialized and complex gasoline and diesel automotive, and related equipment.

Responsibilities

  • A safety sensitive position that performs general overhaul, maintenance, and repair on all types of gasoline and diesel engines; Maintains and repairs  specialized equipment such as bulldozers, sweepers, graders, power mowers;
  • Troubleshoots on computer diagnostic equipment, technical shop manuals and the experience of resolving similar problems in automobiles, light equipment and heavy equipment;
  • Operates testing equipment to check components, pressures, and to make adjustments to engine; checks engine emissions with four-gas analyzer and makes necessary adjustments;
  • Troubleshoots and repairs electronic and computerized systems, to include diesel and gasoline engines, automatic transmissions, axles and hydraulic systems;
  • Repairs construction equipment, electronically controlled systems, and electronic network interfaces;
  • Perform testing and diagnosis of electrical systems and component;
  • Diagnose, inspect, and install/replace heating and air conditioning systems and components using proper tools and equipment while demonstrating proper ale recovery/recycling, evacuation and recharging techniques;
  • Overhauls or replaces pumps, compressors, turbo, blowers, generators, shock absorbers, starters, and other related equipment as required;
  • Repairs hydraulic and air brake systems, doors and their components;
  • Performs shop and road tests of repaired equipment before placing it back in service;
  • Perform regularly scheduled, emergency and/or preventative maintenance work; Check fluid levels and air in tires, lubricates moving parts, and change coolant, oil, fluids and
  • Dismount and mount automotive, truck and heavy equipment Fix or as required, install new tires (install plug, patch or other tire repair appropriate to situation).
  • Refuel vehicles, monitor tank pressures and flow rates to ensure proper refueling; Maintain an accurate and adequate inventory of fuels, oils and chemicals transported and dispensed;
  • Perform emergency repairs on various types of vehicles in the the field. 
  • Maintains accurate records of materials and time spent on each assigned work

ADDITIONAL DUTIES. Performs minor welding.

Qualifications

Education. High school or GED.

 

Experience. Five (5) years full time experience in major overhaul, repair and maintenance of automotive and construction equipment, including three years in the repair of diesel engines and /or hydraulics.

 

Experience/Education substitution. In accordance with County Policy.

 

Licenses/Certifications. Must have a valid unrestricted driver's license. Will be required to obtain a Commercial Driver's License Class A with HazMat/Tanker endorsement within the first year of employment.

 

Special Requirements: Positions requiring a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to operate vehicles on public roads are subject to federal drug and alcohol testing regulations, which include pre- employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return to duty, and follow-up testing.

 

Other (e.g., post-offer medical exam, polygraph, background check, driver's license record, etc.). Background check and driver's license record. Must comply with the drug and alcohol Clearinghouse requirements in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION.

Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the automotive mechanic's trade, with particular reference to heavy and light duty maintenance and equipment; the operating and maintenance requirements of heavy duty and maintenance equipment; heavy equipment and automotive repair and maintenance safety principles and  practices; the use of air powered  equipment, lifts, and hoists; heavy equipment hydraulic systems operations and maintenance practices; occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in general vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance work; proper use and disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with established guidelines; traffic laws and rules involved in vehicle and equipment operations; Federal OSHA, State and County regulations, and County policies regarding safe work practices.

 

Ability to follow written and oral instruction; read and interpret  diagrams, technical data and specifications, and operation/service manuals; operate air powered wrenches, tire break-down  equipment and Acetylene, MIG or TIG welding equipment; diagnose and repair complex problems within accepted guidelines.
